16 Killed, 28 Injured in Bus Crash in South Sinai Peninsula, Egypt

CAIRO – Sep 2, 2026 [VoM News]: Tragically, at least 16 people lost their lives, with an additional 28 sustaining injuries, when a passenger bus veered off the road and overturned in Egypt’s South Sinai Peninsula on Wednesday.

The Egyptian Ministry of Health confirmed the heartbreaking incident, which took place on the road connecting two well-loved tourist hotspots: Dahab and Nuweiba, nestled along the eastern edge of the Sinai.

Emergency services, including a fleet of 20 ambulances, swiftly responded to the scene. Their mission was twofold: to attend to the injured, ferrying them to medical facilities for treatment (their current conditions remain undisclosed), and to recover those who tragically perished.

Reports from Jordanian state television have surfaced, confirming the devastating loss of 10 Jordanian citizens. According to Jordan’s official Al-Mamlaka channel, the bus was carrying a total of 43 individuals, of which 22 were Jordanians.

The investigation into the cause of this accident is ongoing, and as yet, authorities have offered no comment on potential arrests.

This section of the South Sinai coast, particularly the stretch between Dahab and Nuweiba, is renowned for its appeal to tourists, boasting pristine beaches, abundant marine life, stunning natural landscapes, and picturesque mountain trails.

Sadly, road accidents are not uncommon in Egypt, with driving under the influence, poorly maintained vehicles, and inconsistency in traffic law enforcement frequently cited as primary reasons. We’re still reeling from another devastating accident last month where no less than 18 individuals, predominantly teenagers, lost their lives in northern Egypt due to a collision between two pickup trucks carrying agricultural workers.

In a country that, according to official figures, saw almost 6,000 lives tragically claimed by road accidents last year, safety on our roads remains an urgent and profound concern.
