Five Condemned to Death in Odisha for 2019 Politician Murder
In a significant legal development, a court in Odisha‘s Keonjhar district has handed down the death penalty to five individuals convicted of the 2019 murder of politician Rama Chandra Behera. The decision, announced by the additional district and sessions judge of Anandpur, came on Tuesday and is based on the compelling testimony of 53 witnesses and 94 documents, according to additional public prosecutor Aswini Kumar Mallick.

The five individuals sentenced to death are identified as Sanjay Prusty, Ajit Prusty, Arun Prusty, Alekh Prusty, and Dola Boitei. Notably, one of the accused, Pramod Das, who was a minor at the time of the crime, is currently in judicial custody at a child care institute (CCI), as mentioned by Mallick. This underscores the complexity of the legal proceedings surrounding the case, especially when dealing with a minor offender.

Rama Chandra Behera, a former block chairman, met a gruesome end near his residence at Dhakotha village in Keonjhar district on March 25, 2019, just ahead of the general and state assembly polls. The assailants not only visited Behera’s house but also lured him out before carrying out the heinous act. The brutality of the crime extended to the mutilation of his body, painting a grim picture of the incident.

Following the attack, Rama Chandra Behera was rushed to the sub-divisional hospital in Anandpur and later referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries on the way to Cuttack, according to police reports. The medical response and subsequent transfer highlight the severity of the injuries sustained during the attack.
This court verdict, with its capital punishment ruling, serves as a solemn reminder of the consequences of such heinous crimes, offering a semblance of justice for the tragic loss of Rama Chandra Behera.
