In District Doda, the police force is currently imparting training to a cohort of 250 women with the aim of integrating them into the Village Defence Guards (VDGs). The objective is to empower these women to effectively counteract any potential terrorist threats within their respective communities.

These women, predominantly from the rural areas of the mountainous district of Doda, are undergoing rigorous training in various combat skills, including marksmanship, to equip them in thwarting nefarious activities and preserving peace in their regions.

Sources reveal that the motivation for these women to actively participate in safeguarding their villages stems from a tragic incident—the Kulhand massacre in 2006—where over a dozen villagers lost their lives to terrorist violence.

Fueled by a determination to prevent such atrocities, these women willingly volunteered for weapon training. As of now, the Village Defence Guards consist of 875 members, encompassing over 6000 individuals, with 4600 of them being remunerated for their services.

The training provided to VDG members includes proficiency in firing techniques, strategic area dominance, and efficient patrolling. The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Doda expressed satisfaction with the performance of VDG members, highlighting their valuable contributions in collaborating with the police and other security forces to monitor and counteract anti-national elements.

Additionally, the SSP disclosed that firing ranges have been established in strategic locations such as Doda, Bhaderwah, and Gandoh.

These firing ranges serve as dedicated training grounds where VDG members undergo routine firing practice, further enhancing their preparedness and skill sets.
