Telangana Chief Minister Pledges Substantial Support for Gig Workers
Telangana’s Chief Minister, Revanth Reddy, pledged substantial aid for gig workers involved in food delivery, cab driving, auto-rickshaw services, and announced proposed benefits during a meeting at Nampally Exhibition Grounds.
Promising to introduce policies aimed at the welfare of these workers, Reddy detailed plans for a Rs 5 lakh accidental policy and medical coverage up to Rs 10 lakh under the Rajiv Arogyasri scheme.
Acknowledging the challenges faced by these workers in their daily routines, Reddy assured them that their concerns would be given priority attention by the state government.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to providing social security to these workers, paralleling the promise made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to support unorganised workers with jobs and social security.
Highlighting the need for a comprehensive policy akin to Rajasthan’s, Reddy expressed intentions to introduce a robust law during the upcoming Budget session in the Assembly.
The Chief Minister stressed the importance of corporations prioritizing the welfare of their workers alongside profit motives, warning of stringent actions against organizations failing to ensure the well-being of their employees.
In addition to outlining future policies, Reddy directed officials to extend financial aid of Rs 2 lakh to the family of a deceased food delivery boy who lost his life while fleeing from a dog.
Criticizing the previous government for its lack of support, he emphasized the government’s role in aiding families during such tragic incidents.
To facilitate the application process, Reddy advised cab drivers, food delivery workers, and auto drivers to submit their applications digitally or manually at Grama Sabhas, organized from December 28 to January 6, 2024.
The announcements made by the Chief Minister signal a proactive step towards supporting and securing the welfare of gig workers in the state.
