A new study by Emisil examined 50 cities worldwide to determine the top ten sexiest cities. This ranking identifies cities perceived as the most sexually vibrant and open based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors that contribute to their erotic appeal.
São Paulo, Brazil, takes the top spot as the sexiest city in the world with a perfect composite score of 100. This vibrant metropolis leads in the number of sex events, hosting about 53, and has the highest number of hotels for one-night stays listed on Booking.com, with a total of 2,890 options. São Paulo also has the highest count of sex shops among the ranked cities, totaling 119. Its liberal stance on sex work, where it is fully legal, adds to the city’s allure, making it the definitive leader in erotic appeal globally.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, closely follows in second place with a score of 97.07. While it doesn’t match São Paulo in sheer numbers, Rio still impresses with 21 sex events and 1,541 hotels for short stays. The city maintains a vibrant sexual culture, with residents engaging in sexual activity an average of 1.5 times per week and having around nine sexual partners on average. With sex work also fully legal, Rio de Janeiro confirms Brazil’s dominance in the top two ranks of the world’s sexiest cities.
Athens, Greece, ranks third with a composite score of 92.77. This historic city stands out for having one of the highest averages of sexual partners, with residents reporting 10.6 on average. Athens also supports a thriving nightlife with seven strip clubs and a fully legal status for sex work, enhancing its erotic appeal. Although it has fewer sex events than São Paulo and Rio, the city’s liberal atmosphere and accessibility to adult services keep it high on the list.
Budapest, Hungary, takes the fourth position with a score of 89.61, driven by its remarkable number of sex events—47, second only to São Paulo. With seven strip clubs and a fully legal status for sex work, Budapest offers a rich environment for adult entertainment. The city also has 40 sex shops and a steady frequency of sexual activity among its residents.
Copenhagen, Denmark, ranks fifth with a score of 87.74. Known for its progressive attitude, Copenhagen has nine strip clubs, which is among the highest in the top ten. The city also benefits from a relatively high average of sexual partners at 9.3 and frequent sexual activity, averaging 1.4 times per week. Although it has only one sex event, the city’s strong scores in other areas keep it firmly in the top half of the rankings.
Vienna, Austria, lands in sixth place with a composite score of 85.41. The city balances a high average number of sexual partners (9.7) and eight strip clubs, complemented by 10 sex events. With 1,016 hotels for one-night stays, Vienna provides ample opportunities for short-stay accommodations, contributing to its standing as one of the sexiest cities. The fully legal status of sex work also plays a crucial role in Vienna’s ranking.
Berlin, Germany, is in seventh place with a score of 84.46. It has 16 strip clubs, the second-highest among the top ten cities, and 44 sex shops, reflecting its open and vibrant adult scene. While the average number of sexual partners is on the lower side at 5.8, Berlin’s active nightlife and the presence of 22 sex events ensure its place among the sexiest cities globally.
Lima, Peru, follows closely in eighth position with a score of 83.12. The city offers a unique combination of 21 sex shops and frequent sexual activity, with residents engaging 1.4 times per week. Although it has only one strip club and one sex event, Lima compensates with a high number of short-stay hotels (1,346) and a fully legal status for sex work, enhancing its appeal.
Auckland, New Zealand, comes in ninth with a score of 82.81, standing out for having the highest average number of sexual partners at 13.2. This is a significant lead compared to other cities in the top ten. Auckland also has 11 strip clubs, and sex work is fully legal, adding to its status as a sexually open and vibrant city despite having relatively fewer sex events and sex shops.
Prague, Czech Republic, rounds out the top ten with a score of 80.33. The city is notable for its 16 strip clubs and a fully legal sex work environment. While Prague has fewer sex shops (11) and sex events (7), its blend of adult entertainment options and liberal policies secures its position as one of the sexiest cities in the world.
A spokesperson from Emisil commented on the study: “Cities with open attitudes towards sex work and diverse adult entertainment options are not just about indulgence—they reflect deeper societal values around freedom, personal expression, and the normalization of sexual diversity. This isn’t just about nightlife; it’s about how societies prioritize and facilitate open, honest conversations about sexuality, which can foster a more inclusive and accepting community culture.”
Methodology: The study evaluated cities across six key factors: the number of sex shops, the average number of sexual partners among residents, the average frequency of sexual activity per week, the number of strip clubs, the frequency of sex-related events (such as adult-themed parties and festivals), and the availability of hotels catering to short stays as listed on Booking.com. Additionally, the legal status of sex work was considered, categorized as fully legal, partially legal, or not legal. Each city’s composite score was then calculated and scaled to a range of 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating a stronger overall erotic appeal. Cities were subsequently ranked based on these scaled scores.
