Petition Filed Against Urs Celebration at Taj Mahal by Right-Wing Organization
A right-wing organization, Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha (ABHM), has filed a petition in an Agra court seeking a prohibitory injunction against the observation of the ‘Urs’ at the Taj Mahal. The petition challenges the free entry for ‘Urs’ inside the Taj Mahal, with the court setting March 4 as the date of hearing. The three-day ‘Urs’ event, observed to mark the death of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, is scheduled from February 6 to February 8 this year.
Controversy Over ‘Urs’ Celebration
ABHM’s petition calls for a permanent prohibitory injunction against the committee organizing the ‘Urs’ and objects to free entry during the event at the Taj Mahal. The organization argues that historical records, obtained through an RTI, reveal that neither the Mughals nor the British allowed ‘Urs’ to take place inside the Taj. The controversy raises questions about the cultural and religious events conducted at the iconic monument, emphasizing the need for legal clarity and resolution.
Historical Perspective and RTI Findings
ABHM spokesperson Sanjay Jat highlights that the petition is based on an RTI response, indicating that neither the Mughals, the British government, nor the Government of India permitted ‘Urs’ celebration in the Taj Mahal. The organization aims to prevent the organizers of the Shahjahan ‘Urs’ Celebration Committee from conducting the event at the Taj Mahal based on these historical assertions.
The legal proceedings will likely shed light on the balance between cultural and religious practices and the preservation of historical monuments, with the Taj Mahal serving as a symbol of India’s rich heritage.
