Meta’s Spokesperson Wanted in Russia Amid Social Media Crackdown
Russia has intensified its crackdown on social media platforms and freedom of expression by adding Andy Stone, a spokesperson for Meta Platforms, to its wanted list. The specific charges against Stone remain undisclosed. This move is part of Russia’s broader strategy to suppress dissent and control information, particularly in the context of its military actions in Ukraine.
Meta Classified as “Extremist” by Moscow
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has been classified as a “terrorist and extremist” organization by Russia since October 2022. This designation has led to the blocking of Facebook and Instagram in the country, limiting access to these platforms to VPN usage only. Additionally, other social media platforms and independent media that critique the Kremlin have also faced bans.
Impact on Social Media Usage in Russia
Before the implementation of these bans, Meta’s applications, particularly Instagram, were widely used by millions of Russians, especially among the youth. The current restrictions represent a significant shift in the digital landscape of Russia, with notable implications for both social media companies and Russian citizens’ access to global digital platforms.
