Maharashtra Government Calls Special Session to Address Maratha Reservation Demands
Maratha Quota Activist’s Hunger Strike Spurs Action
The Maharashtra government has decided to convene a special session of the state legislature on February 20 to discuss the demands for the Maratha reservation. This decision was made at the weekly Cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The cabinet meeting has granted approval for a one-day special session to address the various demands put forth by the Maratha community.
Activist’s Hunger Strike Amplifies the Call for Action
The catalyst for this decision was the hunger strike initiated by Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange Patil. He commenced his indefinite hunger strike on February 10 in Jalna district, demanding the inclusion of Marathas in the Other Backward Classes (OBC) to secure reservation. Patil has been persistently advocating for the conversion of the draft notification regarding ‘blood relatives’ of Kunbi Marathas into law and the withdrawal of cases against members of the Maratha community.
Contradictory Statements Raise Concerns
Despite the state government issuing a draft notification assuring Maratha reservation, conflicting statements by leaders have left the community in doubt. The Maratha community, led by Jarange Patil, seeks reservations in education and jobs under the OBC category. However, disagreements within the Maharashtra government, particularly objections from senior leader Chhagan Bhujbal, create uncertainty, particularly regarding reservation under the Kunbi category.
Political Responses and Accusations
A scathing attack on the Maharashtra government came from Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray, who criticized Chief Minister Eknath Shinde for alleged falsehoods and inaction. Thackeray accused the government of providing false consolations and lying to the people, emphasizing the need for a resolution to the Maratha reservation issue.
