Haryana’s Air Quality Declines to ‘Poor’ Category, Winters Worsen Pollution

Haryana, known for its agricultural prominence, is facing a deteriorating air quality situation as the region heads into the winter season. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Haryana dropped to 196, categorizing it as ‘poor.’ This concerning trend is reflected in a PM2.5 concentration that is nearly six times higher than the recommended limit by the World Health Organization for 24-hour air quality.

Worsening Air Quality in the Lead-up to Winter

According to data from AQI.IN (AQI Air Quality Index: Real-time Air Pollution Level), the air quality in Haryana typically starts deteriorating in late October, with winter being the most severely affected season in terms of air pollution. A recent AQI reading recorded the worst air quality index in Haryana at 198, highlighting the deteriorating conditions.

Variability Across Haryana Districts

The air pollution level in Haryana varies across its districts, with several areas falling into the ‘poor’ category. In specific districts, the AQI was recorded as 152 in Ambala, 131 in Bhiwani, 175 in Faridabad, 160 in Karnal, and 129 in Panipat. The diverse AQI levels across districts underscore the regional variability in air quality.

Delhi’s Concurrent Air Quality Challenges

In parallel, the National Capital Region (NCR) is also grappling with air quality issues. The AQI in Delhi was previously categorized as ‘very poor,’ with a recorded AQI of 302. SAFAR-India data highlighted that in the morning, the overall air quality was in the ‘poor’ category, with an AQI of 266. Key locations in Delhi, such as Delhi University and IGI Terminal T3, also exhibited ‘very poor’ air quality conditions.

Importance of the Air Quality Index

The Air Quality Index (AQI) serves as a crucial tool for effectively communicating air quality conditions to the public in a comprehensible manner. It classifies air quality into six categories: Good + Satisfactory, Moderately Polluted, Poor, Very Poor, and Severe, based on the concentration of air pollutants and their potential health impacts.
