Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday that the Assam government intends to introduce a bill to prohibit polygamy in the state during the upcoming budget session of the assembly. Sarma stated that the draft of the bill is currently under scrutiny by the Law Department, emphasizing the government’s commitment to legislate against polygamy.

Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Legislation in Consideration

Chief Minister Sarma also expressed the government’s interest in the legislation on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The UCC will be deliberated during a special four-day session of the Uttarakhand assembly starting February 5. Sarma indicated that the Assam government would monitor the bill and explore the possibility of its full implementation, taking the time to examine and proceed accordingly.

Budget Session Details

The budget session of the Assam assembly is scheduled to begin on February 5 and conclude on February 28. The budget for the next fiscal year will be presented on February 12. The government’s legislative agenda includes addressing issues related to polygamy and potential consideration of the Uniform Civil Code during this session.
